book review

there were some funny parts but a lot of it was pretty science-y and boring. i'd say, wait for the movie.

i got a kindle for christmas. a kindle is a robot that can be just about any book you want it to be. but if you don't touch it for a few minutes, the robot turns into a picture of something book-related! so now when i fall asleep while reading (which i do every time i read), i wake up to the image of a famous author!

armistice day

today is veteran's day, which is a day when we honor all of our veterans. it used to be called armistice day, which was the day WWI ended. so it honored that. i remember learning that from reading breakfast of champions which is by kurt vonnegut, who is a veteran and whose birthday is november 11. i read that book all in one day. i had never, and have never since, been able to read a whole book in one day. anyway, i'm reading that book again. starting today. if it goes well, i might read this book every year on veterans day.

but i probably won't. happy armistice/veterans/birthday.

schoolpants version of the bible

you know how there's a king james version of the bible? well, someday, i would like to write the schoolpants version of the bible. it would just be my interpretation. and i think i'd edit out the boring parts. also, i'd have more dialogue. and action. and adventure. also, i'd have drawings and photographs throughout. and this would be the picture on the last page:
also, i think i'd change it from "bible" to "bibble." no real reason. just more fun to say.

ed poe: dead at 200

edgar allan poe would've turned 200 years old today. the only thing that stopped him: death.

poe is just one of dozens, literally dozens, of great americans whose lives were cut short by death. most famous for inventing the po'boy, the sandwich that made new orleans famous, poe also dabbled in writing. awhile ago, i bought this book of short stories that he wrote. the first one was called "the black cat" and it was totally awesome. after that, i didn't really finish any of the other stories because he uses SO many words. and i have no attention span. still. black cat was awesome.

at work, there's this calendar that has birthdays of famous musicians and it said that today was janis joplin's birthday. then some customer came in wearing a janis joplin t-shirt and i was like "hey it's her birthday today." and i think it made the customer uncomfortable. she avoided eye contact and mumbled something like "meh, yeah. i heard that on the radio, meh." she was trying to play it off like she's not a joplin-nerd. but c'mon. there's nothing wrong about being nerdy about stuff you like.

the calendar also told me that today is dolly parton's birthday. she's 63. what's weird is: i remember seeing dolly parton in a movie or something when i was like 11. and at the time, i figured she was like 50. and, for whatever reason, when i remember someone as being 50 when i was 11, i assume that now, they must be like 87. which is ridiculous because it hasn't been 37 years since i was 11 years old. not yet anyway.
so tonight, i was checking out other birthdays and i found this awesome website (with a sweet cosmic background) and it told me that LOADS of cool people were born on january 19. for instance: jodie sweetin (stephanie from full house); shawn wayans (of wayan's brothers fame); junior seau (pro footballer and children's advocate); desi arnaz jr (illegitimate son of lucille ball); dewey bunnell (of pop-rock trio "america"); paul cezzane (post-impressionist painter); and robert e. lee (leader of the douche bags who fought to keep slavery legal).

more importantly, today was doctor martin luther king jr day. and that dude was awesome.

read books, eat pizza!

if it weren't for the Pizza Hut "book it!" program, i never would have learned to read. fact.

"book it!" was this thing where if we got our parents to sign a paper that said we'd read a book, we'd get a little star sticker. we'd put said sticker on our "book it button." once we filled the six star spots on our "book it!" button, we'd get a free personal pan pizza at pizza hut (one topping only)!

in the midwest, when i was growing up, Pizza Hut was king. and Pizza King did pretty good business too. what i'm trying to say is, we liked chain restaurants. and pizza hut had a damned good gimmick. "give the 7yr old a free tiny pizza and mom and pop will bring the rest of the fam for full-price pizza."

in my first grade class, the teacher rewarded the top three readers with an added bonus of a saturday trip out to her house in the country. i got to go. it was fun. she had a pond. danny omlor found a turtle there and she let him keep it. the turtle had an orange belly. danny named him michelangelo.

i read a book!

last week, i went home for thanksgiving and on my way home, i read a book! the whole damn thing in one day! can you believe it?

the book was "breakfast of champions" by kurt vonnegut, jr. it's great. vonnegut is from indiana, like me. and he was awesome, like i want to be.

anyway, that's the fastest i've ever read a book. seeya.
